Capital Concrete Supplies Multiple Concrete Mixes To East London Data Centre

Capital Concrete has responded to exacting specification requirements and supplied a range of concrete mixes, including low-carbon concrete solutions, for the construction of a major new hyperscale data centre development in East London.

Being delivered by McLaren Construction, the project represents a significant investment in digital infrastructure and requires large volumes of high-performance concrete capable of meeting demanding structural, durability and sustainability criteria.

To meet the project specification, Capital Concrete has designed, tested and supplied a range of concrete mixes for the piling and foundation works. The company has worked closely with McLaren Construction and specialist groundworks and piling contractor, Keltbray, to develop solutions that meet both performance requirements and sustainability objectives, with a particular focus on reducing embodied carbon wherever possible.

Much of the concrete supplied has been specified as DC4 concrete, designed to withstand challenging sulphate ground conditions while delivering long-term durability. To achieve this, the mixes incorporate high levels of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), with around 70% cement replacement in some applications. While primarily selected to satisfy durability requirements, the use of high GGBS content also significantly reduces the embodied carbon of the concrete compared with conventional mixes.

Capital Concrete has also incorporated CarbonCure® technology across its standard concrete mixes. The technology permanently mineralises captured and recycled CO₂ within the concrete during production, reducing the carbon footprint of the material while maintaining strength, quality and performance. By combining CarbonCure technology with high-GGBS mix designs, Capital Concrete has helped deliver lower-carbon concrete solutions that align with the project’s environmental objectives.

All concrete supplied to the project has been supplied from Capital Concrete's Silvertown plant, providing a reliable local supply chain capable of meeting the substantial demand generated by a project of this scale. Combined with rigorous quality control and comprehensive testing procedures, this has enabled Capital Concrete to deliver compliant, high-performance concrete solutions throughout the construction programme.

The project highlights Capital Concrete's capability in developing and supplying concrete mixes for complex infrastructure projects. Through the provision of durable, lower-carbon concrete solutions for critical structural elements, including the use of high GGBS content and CarbonCure carbon-mineralisation technology, the company is helping to deliver the robust foundations required for one of East London's latest data centre developments while supporting the construction industry's transition towards more sustainable building practices.
